Things that Happened to Us
| The Monastery Mystery

The Trappist Monastery, St. Norbert, Winnipeg, Manitoba

Things that Happened to Us at the Ruins

  • Bonnie got pushed and nearly fell face first in the dirt
  • Camera batteries died
  • Cameras wouldn't work but batteries were ok
  • Cameras flashed on their own but we don't have any odd shots
  • This is the first time I personally felt anything
  • And all Merna wanted to do was go home she was so creeped out

I am not as sensitive to the spirits as my friends Bonnie and Merna but there was a certain spot in the parking lot where my scalp was just crawling.  I actually thought at first it was nothing and was about to dismiss it until Bonnie turned around and mentioned that she had just felt funny at the same place.  I've felt it there each time.  We now call this the "hot spot".

Bonnie and I have been out there four (4) times now and something has happened each time.  Merna has only been with us once so far but even she was not immune and had her own camera problems.

It's at the point now that when we're having problems we just tell the folks there that we want to take pictures and could they please leave the cameras alone.  Seems to work.

However, the first time there I had problems with my camera and Bonnie was rather crusty when she told the spirits to quit fooling around we wanted to take pictures.  The pictures went well after that.

It wasn't too long after that we thought it was too light out so we left, then thought better of it again and returned.

In the car on the return trip Bonnie started to quietly sob.  Tears were running down her cheeks.  I asked her what was wrong and she said that she felt such "despair" and "sadness" and sighed very deeply.  By the time we got to the lights at the bridge about a minute later she was fine.  However, as we were getting closer to the parking lot she suddenly cried out in pain and grabbed her right shoulder.  All she could say was ow, ow, ow and was rocking back and forth.  It only lasted about 10 seconds but it really shook her up.

It was just after this that Bonnie got pushed in the parking lot at the "hot spot".  All I saw was her go flying in front of me.  It definitely was not a trip.  It was a definite push.  Bonnie figured the spirits were upset with the way she spoke to them earlier and were letting her know it.  We are now more respectful when we ask them to quit fooling around with the equipment.

This is an excellent site to find out about the life and history of the Cistercian Monks (members of the Cistercian Order of Strict Observance)

How many times have you seen a movie and noticed things the second and third time around that you didn't see the first time?

Well, this is one of those times.  From the first picture that was taken to the last in this group was a total of 29 minutes 16 seconds.  Obviously we were there longer than that but that is the time frame of the pictures.  Also, we were alone at the ruins for the entire time.  A car pulled up as we were leaving.

One of our hunts took us to the Trappist Monastery out in St. Norbert.  It's a beautiful area with a lot of history.  Anyways, at the time we had been out there twice.  The second time with our friend Merna.  So, of course we've downloaded our photos and sent the best ones to Walmart Photo Centre.  We've looked at the pictures on the computer at least 4 times already.  I've looked at the Walmart photos at least twice.  So, last night (25 Sep 2007) when Bonnie said we have to go to the Chapel Lawn Cemetery I said ok.   (I think her urgent desire to go to Chapel Lawn and look at pictures after was manipulated in a way that she was bound to look at the Monastery photos.)

Went.  Walked.  Took pictures.  Drove.  Took pictures.  Walked.  Took pictures.  You get the idea.  So, we came home and downloaded (I'll have the photos up soon).

After we had looked at the evenings photos Bonnie started looking over the photos from the Monastery (we went on the 12th).  Next thing I hear is "Jo ... I have a 'monkey-man' in my picture!".  I said "What!?!".  She said "Yeah.  Come take a look."  So I went over to where the computer was and before she could point out what she was talking about I said "What's that!?!".

Right there in colour was the shadow of what looked like a person climbing in through the window and reaching out for something.  Freaky.

One other thing ... the pictures were taken with 2 cameras by 2 different people and at different spots in that particular area of the ruins.

Our first photo of Monk-e-ManClose up of Monk-e-Man

The window your looking at is to the right of the entrance door near the top right-hand side.

Well one of the first things we had to do was either confirm or deny the condition of that particular window before and after the image appeared.  I went through all of my pictures and found nice clear ones of the church's windows.  They are from other pictures taken that night as well as daylight shots.  Nothing there (actually most of my pictures there's nothing there).

The window on the right is clear, no shadows

The right-hand window is clear.  I'll get to the orange colouring later.

The next step was checking Bonnie's pictures and then Merna's.  With Bonnie's pictures all of the pictures of the windows before and after were clear.

I started going through Merna's pictures and low and behold ... "monkey-man".  There was a slight change in posture but it was definitely in the same window.

Merna's Monk-e-Man

Here in the right-hand window again is a shadow that looks like it's going through the window - either in or out.

Ok, now we need to check when the pictures were taken.  What was the difference in time between each shot.  The one nice thing about digital cameras is that when you take a picture it records everything about the photo.  I checked the general time of the photos - they were both taken at 08:22 pm.  Doesn't tell me much.  So, going to properties and checking the time we found out that contrary to what we had thought (that Merna's picture came first and the "monkey-man" was entering the building) it was actually Bonnie's picture, then Merna's (he was exiting the building).

Bonnie took her photo at 08:22:24 pm and Merna took hers at 08:22:34 pm.  10/100 of a second later.  Almost at the exact moment.

Cool.

Now we're calling him "Monk-E-Man".  Monastery -- Monks -- Natural Progression.

 Fire and Flame

There were some anomalies that we had noticed earlier in the pictures.  We've had various comments on what they could be.  Reflection from an outside light post being the most likely.  But some of them just didn't have a reasonable explanation.

So, back to the Monastery to check out the light standards in the yard.  We proceeded to take photos as close as possible to the original shots as well as deliberate shots of the light standard through the windows and door.  We knew from being there before that you can see a wall through the door on the right.  And one thing I found funny was when I made sure that I could see the light through the window, the pictures showed them black.  No light coming through the windows at all.  We had the same results on the door on the right.  No light, and we can see the wall.  What gives?

Below are the 13 pictures that Bonnie and Merna took in order of time taken as well as a zoomed image.

(1) Our first hint of colour (time taken 20:17:10).  Might be the light standard.

(2)  Just a hint of a shadow in the left-hand side of the right-hand window (time taken 20:18:00)

(3)  The largest shadow with some orange in the door to the right (time taken 20:22:20).

  (4)  We figure this shows the leg bent over the bar with the knee and foot showing (time taken 20:22:34).

(5)  We're still trying to figure out if this is the lamp post in the outside yard.  Funny though, photos we've taken where we see the light through the door turn up black (time taken 20:30:00).

(6)  Just another hint of colour (time taken 20:31:10).

 (7)  The consensus from people who have seen these photos is that these are pictures of flames.  Most of the people who've seen this pictures don't know that the Monastery has burnt down twice.  Once by accident (1912) and once by arson (1983) (time taken 20:33:24).

(8)  Colour is getting brighter (time taken 20:34:32).

(9)  This is not a shake of the camera, everything else is in focus.  Do you think this "flame" is now moving outside of the door?  Some people have commented on this photo saying they see the profile of a man (time taken 20:34:44).

(10)  Face is too creepy to even discuss.  Do you see a face?  Both Merna and Bonnie couldn't sleep at night on the day they viewed the picture.  Bonnie kept her tv on all night and Merna kept making her motion sensor blink just to make sure nothing was there.  Views on this picture is that it is the face of the devil or a demon visible in the flames (time taken 20:35:28).

(11)  Moving back into the room that used to be there (time taken 20:35:40).

(12)  There is no way the lamp post on the other side gives off this kind of light.  Bonnie sees two (2) skulls, one small and another quite large.  I see a right hand.  What do you see? (time taken 20:36:58).

(13)  Things have now run down and this is the last picture we have with the orange colouring.  Could be the light standard.  I don't know (time taken 20:46:26).
